Jalen Moss scored 19 points to lead Thomson to a 66-61 road win over Lincoln County Friday to improve to 3-0 for the season. Lincoln County, playing its first game of the season, had an opportunity to tie the game in the final seconds, but the Red Devils were unable to get a shot after freshman Jahkiaus Jones stole the ball and finished on the other end right before the buzzer sounded to provide the final margin.

“It was purely instinct on Jahkiaus’s part,” Thomson head coach Michael Thomas explained Saturday in a text message. “The dribbler turned his back and Jahkiaus stole the ball and laid it up.”

Coach Thomas credited his team’s defensive effort for the win, specifically mentioning Moss’s effort in taking on the task of guarding Lincoln County’s heralded 6-5 sophomore Frankquon Sherman, as opposed to focusing on Moss’s team leading point total.

“We competed. The pressure eventually paid off over four quarters,” said Thomas. “Jalen accepted the challenge to guard one of their better players (Sherman).”

Sherman is certainly difficult to contain, and he proved it by scoring a game high 20 points to go along with 17 by senior teammate Caleb Willis, who offered up two highlight worthy dunks for the home crowd.

JC Brooks added 13 points for Thomson, and Lavonta Ivery, another freshman, added 9, including a pair of three pointers. We noted in our game preview Friday the anticipation surrounding the freshmen Ivery and Jones. Right on queue, both contributed nicely in the win. Coach Thomas provided feedback about Jones, who played for the first time Friday after missing the first two games because the football team (Jones is the part time quarterback) made a playoff run.

“He played decently for his first varsity game, especially since he was just coming out of football,” Thomas said. “However he is still learning our system, and we’ve given him a lot to digest in a short period of time. But with his basketball background and experience, he’s picking up everything extremely well.”

“Sophomore Malik Ferguson picked up a loose ball in the middle of the paint with one second remaining, and right before the fourth quarter buzzer sounded, he released a shot that found its mark to give Grovetown 61-60 win over Evans Friday, a result that threw the top spot in the class 6A, region 5 standings into a three way tie between Grovetown, Evans and Heritage to mark the beginning of the stretch run for the league’s regular season championship. Ferguson’s shot came at the end of a full court dash by Grovetown after head coach Darren Douglas was able to draw up a play during a timeout that was meant to result in a bucket in only six seconds. The play was designed for senior Zach Bell, who eventually fumbled the ball after spinning between defenders at the end of a drive that began near half court after he gathered the ball from freshman Derrion Reid.”

That was Chad Cook’s rundown of the instant classic that these two teams played two weeks ago. That win by Grovetown sets up a must-win scenario for Evans as they look to maintain their footing in the race for a region championship.

Be sure to get your ? ready early because if tonight’s game is as exciting as the last one, you just might forget those jokers altogether!
