Buck Harris – Jones County Head Coach – Former Laney Head Coach

If anybody knows exactly what Evans High head coach Kevin Kenny is up against Monday night, it’s Kenny’s friend, and friend to all of us in the Augusta basketball community, Buck Harris, who is one of the most highly respected coaches in the state and whose resume also includes a standout history as a player for Westside High and Augusta University.

With local hoops fans buzzing about Evans’ opportunity to face nationally renowned Norcross in the semifinals of the Lemon Street Classic Monday, we think now is a perfect time to bring in Harris, currently the second year coach of Jones County, and formerly the head man for Laney, whose 2014-15 team proved to be one of the best in the area’s history when they won 29 straight games, including 7 against the likes of Norcross, when the Wildcats played the most difficult schedule any area team has ever faced.

Harris’s Wildcats, which included four future NCAA Division I and II starters and all-conference players, finished 29-2 before being upset in the semifinals of the class 3A state semifinals by Morgan County, which Laney had beaten twice earlier that season. Below are the results of the most high profile games Laney played that season. If we hadn’t witnessed them, we wouldn’t believe them. And if anybody can provide perspective about the task ahead for Evans, it’s Buck.

2014-15 Results

St. Francis 67, Laney 64

Laney 65, Pebblebrook 59

Laney 81, Lanier 52

Laney 59, Berkmar 52

Laney 71, Morgan County 67 – OT

Laney 78, Morgan County 62

Laney 60, Jenkins 49

“Sophomore Malik Ferguson picked up a loose ball in the middle of the paint with one second remaining, and right before the fourth quarter buzzer sounded, he released a shot that found its mark to give Grovetown 61-60 win over Evans Friday, a result that threw the top spot in the class 6A, region 5 standings into a three way tie between Grovetown, Evans and Heritage to mark the beginning of the stretch run for the league’s regular season championship. Ferguson’s shot came at the end of a full court dash by Grovetown after head coach Darren Douglas was able to draw up a play during a timeout that was meant to result in a bucket in only six seconds. The play was designed for senior Zach Bell, who eventually fumbled the ball after spinning between defenders at the end of a drive that began near half court after he gathered the ball from freshman Derrion Reid.”

That was Chad Cook’s rundown of the instant classic that these two teams played two weeks ago. That win by Grovetown sets up a must-win scenario for Evans as they look to maintain their footing in the race for a region championship.

Be sure to get your ? ready early because if tonight’s game is as exciting as the last one, you just might forget those jokers altogether!

Streams will be posted here. Tip-off times are as follows:
