Grovetown drilled Heritage 92-75 Monday in the first consolation game of the Lemon Street Classic at Marietta High School. The Warriors were led by senior Julius Brown, who poured in 43 points, including 27 during the first half when Grovetown established a 50-26 lead over its region rival after only 16 minutes.

Fellow senior Zach Bell added 26 points and sophomore Malik Ferguson chipped in 12. Heritage was led by Ole Miss signee James White, who scored 27 points.

Grovetown, which dropped a 75-66 decision to Miller Grove in Saturday’s quarterfinal round, will face the winner between Warner Robins and Lanier in Tuesday’s fifth-place game.

Grovetown, which dropped a 75-66 decision to Miller Grove in Saturday’s quarterfinal round, will face the winner between Warner Robins and Lanier in Tuesday’s fifth-place game. Grovetown head coach Darren Douglas wasn’t pleased with his team’s performance Saturday. But in our post-game interview below, you will find him to be satisfied with the way his team bounced back today –  “like a tennis ball, and not an egg” – after being knocked to the ground in the quarterfinal loss. From there, the conversation became a wide-ranging discussion about what Douglas values as a coach, his perspective about Brown’s maturity as a leader and young man, and the progress that is being made by Ferguson and the team’s promising underclassmen.

Finally, after being prompted to remember a past matchup with Warner Robins when considering them as a possible opponent Tuesday, coach Douglas mentions the fact that during his second year as a head coach (2017-18), when his Aquinas team defeated Saint Francis in the class 1A Private state championship game, his team posted a 5-2 record in 7 games played against state championship teams. That led to a gratifying discussion about the imprint Douglas has already made on the Peach State hoops scene, even though he is only half a decade into his head coaching career. This exchange made for two consecutive days that Zone706 was lucky enough to conduct interviews with two of the most highly respected coaches in the state, having had a similar discussion with Buck Harris yesterday about his success leading Laney to a brilliant Peach State run during the 2014-15 season.

“Sophomore Malik Ferguson picked up a loose ball in the middle of the paint with one second remaining, and right before the fourth quarter buzzer sounded, he released a shot that found its mark to give Grovetown 61-60 win over Evans Friday, a result that threw the top spot in the class 6A, region 5 standings into a three way tie between Grovetown, Evans and Heritage to mark the beginning of the stretch run for the league’s regular season championship. Ferguson’s shot came at the end of a full court dash by Grovetown after head coach Darren Douglas was able to draw up a play during a timeout that was meant to result in a bucket in only six seconds. The play was designed for senior Zach Bell, who eventually fumbled the ball after spinning between defenders at the end of a drive that began near half court after he gathered the ball from freshman Derrion Reid.”

That was Chad Cook’s rundown of the instant classic that these two teams played two weeks ago. That win by Grovetown sets up a must-win scenario for Evans as they look to maintain their footing in the race for a region championship.

Be sure to get your ? ready early because if tonight’s game is as exciting as the last one, you just might forget those jokers altogether!
